<span style="color: #2e2e2e; font-family: "Constantia","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Constantia;">Monday night my art quilt group,
Women Against the Grain, met. It was the reveal of the latest 12 x 12 challenge, response to the word "Chaos". The responses were colorful,
for the most part abstract, always lively, interesting works of art portraying
"Chaos". From illustrations of the disorder of an artist’s studio,
the confusion that can be created with line, the movement of matter to and over
that cosmic line where order is created, to 3D illustration of the chaotic
thoughts and concerns that feel as if they are popping out of our head, to the
personal story of the transformation of chaos to order. They were all
wonderful. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #2e2e2e; font-family: "Constantia","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Constantia;">This image is my contribution.
Not as detailed as some, but it was done on time and allowed me to
continue playing with my current focus, the effect of lines on a background. It was great fun to dye the fabric and stitch the lines. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="color: #2e2e2e; font-family: "Constantia","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Constantia;">Yesterday I came across some of
my writings from six or seven years ago. I am reminded how far I have veered off the
course of establishing a routine writing habit.
The old works, dated and not as exciting to me now, remind me of how much I enjoy the process of writing and editing to get a tight,
reasonably well-written little story about some of the things I notice in the
world around me. It is a way to share my point of view, humor and some quirkiness. More than once I have firmly resolved to write blog articles
routinely with the result that each event has resulted in exactly one and only
one article. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="color: #2e2e2e; font-family: "Constantia","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Constantia;">Reflecting on this sorry state
of affairs, grasping one more time for a way to get in to that writing chair
and write, I happened across a new software product. <u>Zen Writer 2.0</u> by Beenokle
may be the one for me. It is a simple, low budget, low feature set product that creates a stage for a productive writing session. As I sit here writing this, a dimmed view of
a foggy forest covers my entire screen, soft music is playing in the
background, and as I depress the keys a sound reminiscent of the old keyboard noises
accompanies the motion. While all the
other applications - Email, Facebook, Toodledo, Evernote, Feedly and whatever
else has my attention today - are running in the background, no interruptions
of any kind are coming from them. I am totally focused on my writing task.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="color: #2e2e2e; font-family: "Constantia","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Constantia;">I can select the music, the
background scene, the font and size. I like to set it up to show me the time
and sometimes the word and page count at the bottom of the page. When so inclined, I may minimize the screen
and return to the rest of my computer world. Frankly, it seems more compelling
to stay here. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="color: #2e2e2e; font-family: "Constantia","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Constantia;">Are there limitations to this
product? Of course. This is not a replacement for a full-fledged word
processing application. However, once you've written and edited the words, it is
just a matter of copy and paste to a more full-featured, but distracting,
application. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12.0pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;">

<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
Yes, I know it's not
January 1st, but don't you agree that September is more like a new beginning
than January? It's the start of a new school year. Summer vacations are over.
The break we took from some of our volunteer work is ending. New schedules and
events are being added to our calendars. </div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
Since we were small
children this time of new beginnings has been imprinted upon us. First, we were
the children gathering our supplies to get ready for the new school year. Then
we were the parents of school children helping them gather those supplies and
readying those schedules. Now many of us are grandparents who, if we are lucky
enough to be close enough, are working into our calendar the sports and music
events that start up again. </div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
I have never
outgrown the need for the excitement of new beginnings, fresh starts, and new
things to do. I just love September 1st. How about you?</div>

It was also another milestone in my life. It marked the one month anniversary of the first of two total knee replacements. The last month has been very interesting - don't worry I won't bore you with the details. It is sufficient to say it has been humbling, the knees have been all consuming, and the the progress has been very good.<br />
<br />
I find it very interesting to see how things in my artist's life have moved forward without my full attention and management. My art quilt that was on exhibit at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia has returned home. My art quilt to commemorate the 9/11 Anniversary has been on display with others in Chicago. Four art quilts were shipped out for an exhibit for "The Journal of Ordinary Thought" which began last week. Our 'The Unspoken Truth About Color: A Dialogue in Art Quilts About Racism" exhibit was in Pennsylvania last week. I look forward to getting back in to my studio with a clear mind and some awesome inspiration.<br />
<br />
In the last month, I have experienced an earthquake and a hurricane/tropical storm. I have been inspired by the people of Vermont and their reaction to the devastating flooding. A beloved aunt has passed away. Children are back in school, politicians continue to raise my blood pressure, death and destruction continues in many parts of the world, debris from space will be falling somewhere in the world today, and, oh yes, once more we must endure the changes to our Facebook pages.<br />
<br />
I have observed that as quickly as an event can cause our hearts to break, another event causes our hearts to burst with joy. Ah, the circle of life in which we are all bound to one another.Betty Warnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05249834253546474318noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7341311089662060935.post-61762008769670289792011-06-29T21:12:00.000-04:002011-06-29T21:12:03.924-04:00SAQA Benefit Auction 2011 - "Two Shells"<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOrY0uVjvtyu3Mt7BhgFwFbIAi8hj1DAaJF00SG0yITCpFshxnxSFHJRRvNqBZ1IlhkdEa2ogS_PNmfwaZKUAWY81_vE5IMPimE59kPH7O7SqJvxJMtwqr9ZOtWlBs-5hZ6k0R_Vhf2fdD/s1600/two+shells.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOrY0uVjvtyu3Mt7BhgFwFbIAi8hj1DAaJF00SG0yITCpFshxnxSFHJRRvNqBZ1IlhkdEa2ogS_PNmfwaZKUAWY81_vE5IMPimE59kPH7O7SqJvxJMtwqr9ZOtWlBs-5hZ6k0R_Vhf2fdD/s320/two+shells.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />

This piece was done in response to a word challenge from the Textile Abstractions group. The word was 'blight' which immediately brought to my mind the phrase 'urban blight'. The fabric on the right, the brick wall, was originally just plain white and has been painted/stencilled in three layers which was great fun.Betty Warnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05249834253546474318noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7341311089662060935.post-3490379097893354542010-09-12T14:12:00.000-04:002010-09-12T14:12:09.339-04:00SAQA 2010 Benefit Auction<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody>

The challenge was to find product packaging to use for the color scheme, create a still life based on nature, specifically plants. I'm not so sure the still life objective was met, but I had fun working on this. I manipulated a photo - cropping, applying filters, turning into a sketch, and replacing colors, then drew the sketch onto fabric which I then painted and quilted. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>The product packaging was Cheez-It crackers, sometimes found at my house. Red and orange are very appealing to me lately. Abstracting from photos is always fascinating to me. I remember to find those moments by trying to spend my day immersed in the present rather than thinking of the next to do. I create those moments when I do what makes my heart sing - being with those I love, doing what I love, experiencing or creating art, surrounding myself in nature, hearing music.Betty Warnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05249834253546474318noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7341311089662060935.post-85687653982846950482009-12-02T10:35:00.003-05:002009-12-02T10:39:51.256-05:00Back in the Studio<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhshh_lY7LfKYQ9ViRmKXllAyWfYEYesuiPT9ARfEk6lFNclfCrp1pBXY0gP7-jAYOta-RNvygvVpIsTA3oCW9mgTkZ4nW0gxX_9xh3PLWtJ3ME9DENY4RKPxUyKqjyj6IiZH3Y5pN4tZys/s1600-h/amoebas+play.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 310px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410663455624491154" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhshh_lY7LfKYQ9ViRmKXllAyWfYEYesuiPT9ARfEk6lFNclfCrp1pBXY0gP7-jAYOta-RNvygvVpIsTA3oCW9mgTkZ4nW0gxX_9xh3PLWtJ3ME9DENY4RKPxUyKqjyj6IiZH3Y5pN4tZys/s320/amoebas+play.jpg" /></a><br /><div>After a couple of months of little activity in my studio, I am back at work with determination to create every day. (I thought it had only been 3 weeks.) Oh, well! I have been working. In May two quilts were completed. One was a bed quilt for a charity auction.. Unfortunately, possibly because of finishing it at the last minute, no picture exists. The other piece, completed for an art sale at a fund raiser, is a 16" piece based on a photo of some hyacinths seen in Elizabeth Park in West Hartford this past March. It is the first piece I have prepared to hang by wrapping it on stretcher bars. I was striving for the look of a sketch on top of the quilt grid.</div>Betty Warnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05249834253546474318noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7341311089662060935.post-79485993604566313782009-03-09T17:49:00.004-04:002009-03-09T19:08:13.890-04:00Music Makes My Heart Sing<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnBE9-Noc5mtS5jY6BODhKS0z7BP2TSw48sQDDFOD76_W-lsFR0gPqrB_oSye3GYRGE00b357zUDS7F38KQZ12xn1tVK0pcYK3gYpn9Lavr47XIE2QmAs91dOs1knW8s4EQBWY1EKEkCwK/s1600-h/music+makes+my+heart+sing.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311309296465357442" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnBE9-Noc5mtS5jY6BODhKS0z7BP2TSw48sQDDFOD76_W-lsFR0gPqrB_oSye3GYRGE00b357zUDS7F38KQZ12xn1tVK0pcYK3gYpn9Lavr47XIE2QmAs91dOs1knW8s4EQBWY1EKEkCwK/s320/music+makes+my+heart+sing.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div align="left"> </div><div align="left">Another Fast Friday Fabric Challenge. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they could all be shown together, in D.C.? She sent out a call for quilts on major web sites (SAQA and ArtQuilt) and within 30 hours, over 40 quiltmakers responded. Now, we present a show from more than 60 of us: a grass-roots, multi-ethnic, all-volunteer group of women from all around the US and as far away as Australia. This is a quilt show of amazing diversity -- among the quilters and their art. Our extraordinary diversity mirrors the diversity and international support that Obama’s election has generated.<br /><br />The works in this show are art quilts, distant descendants of the folk art tradition. Visitors will discover how contemporary fiber artists have translated and transformed this tradition to create a dynamic collection of fiber art work, all of a common theme: celebrating this historic election. Artists in this show use a wide range of techniques including painting on fabric, fabric dyeing, photography, beadwork, appliqué, stitching, embroidery, and digital transfer. Most of the artists work individuals, but one quilt is made by a small group (the Pixiladies), and another by a 10-person group (Fiber Artists for Obama). Most of the quilts will have their first showing here, but some have already been shown at a major quilt show in Houston.</div></div></div>Betty Warnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05249834253546474318noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7341311089662060935.post-19438263364800840552009-02-18T15:15:00.001-05:002009-02-23T21:53:39.922-05:00Her Coat of Many Generations - 14" x 14"<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT-deCUS7GmN-Zwltbe5t1lXdckksr0Hc4RSuHK58b895Qf_YX44XI7hv-D-aQ06P5WzhUxKdHO68sJXlUqyAu8CQV5yLePROFSIUeLf2tpeSLgqHUxE9VJ49zmXpVBY9tR9yfy7LRCELe/s1600-h/egwarner+full.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306191518263488274" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT-deCUS7GmN-Zwltbe5t1lXdckksr0Hc4RSuHK58b895Qf_YX44XI7hv-D-aQ06P5WzhUxKdHO68sJXlUqyAu8CQV5yLePROFSIUeLf2tpeSLgqHUxE9VJ49zmXpVBY9tR9yfy7LRCELe/s320/egwarner+full.jpg" border="0" /></a> Just made available today - the E Pluribus Unum 2 Quiltart List Challenge online exhibit. We think it is mostly northern European. Many generations of women have lived in this country through good times and bad. We are a family of strong women. Was done as the result of a challenge to get a piece done in a week. Actually had less than a week. Took a shortcut in that I printed the fabric. The result of playing in Photoshop layers. A monochromatic color scheme with a focus on perspective. Printed out the fabric, quilted, added some hand stitching around some of the shapes. Fun to do. May do some modifications to create a larger piece with more fabrics.Betty Warnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05249834253546474318noreply@blogger.com0
